I have written a big Medium article about this part of my life. I get no money for this, but I like to stay informed about the new trends in communication science research. So far, I have finished numerous reviews for one academic journal. Most of them ended with a recommendation for a “major revision”: it is basically a polite rejection, leaving a space for hope to get it published.
I seldom recommend a direct rejection, because I do believe that scholars put a lot of work into their manuscripts and sometimes just need a fresh eye on what they have written. A reviewer’s job does not simply mean saying “yes” or “no”, but providing constructive critic, explaining the weak points of the paper, and giving advice on how to make it better.
Unfortunately, I never got any manuscript I was able to recommend for publication so far — but I am looking forward to reviewing one in the future!
